Begin with your own assessment

Being single does not by itself determine whether IUI, IVF or another pathway is appropriate. The HFEA outlines several possible routes, while the choice still depends on your health, fertility assessment and preferences. Ask the clinic to explain why its recommendation fits you. If donor sperm is involved, confirm how donor selection and necessary screening fit into the timetable. Avoid buying travel around an assumed treatment date before availability and eligibility have been checked. A personal assessment helps distinguish the medical decisions from the administrative requirements that may differ between destinations and individual providers.

Design support around actual appointments

You may feel comfortable travelling independently, yet some procedures or anaesthesia arrangements can require support. Ask exactly what the clinic expects, including accompaniment after treatment and help during an unplanned change. Consider who could join you, who can stay in contact remotely and how you would extend the trip if needed. Make arrangements that preserve your privacy while giving the team an emergency contact. If an agency supplies a companion service, clarify the person's role and limitations. Practical assistance with transport is different from clinical care, and the plan should identify who provides each.

Consider the family questions early

Counselling can help you think through donor conception, future conversations with a child and the support network you want as a parent. Ask what information about the donor will be available later and how records are maintained. Where eligibility or legal parenthood questions arise across borders, obtain advice relevant to your circumstances rather than relying on a travel agent's general reassurance. Request clinic documents in a language you understand. You should have space to explore these decisions before treatment starts, alongside a realistic plan for costs and repeat visits. The purpose is to make your chosen route understandable and workable on your own terms.

Questions to take with you

  1. Why is this treatment appropriate for my assessment?
  2. Which appointments require practical support?
  3. What donor and legal information do I need first?
