Fertility tests before an overseas consultation

Build a useful assessment file without paying twice for investigations.

Start with the unanswered question

An overseas clinic may request a long list of investigations before discussing treatment. Begin by asking which question each test is meant to answer. Fertility assessment can involve ovulation, the womb and fallopian tubes, and semen analysis where relevant. The combination should reflect your history rather than the contents of a standard package. Send a brief account of previous pregnancies, how long you have been trying, menstrual patterns and earlier treatment. Include the original reports you already hold, with their dates, instead of relying on a summary such as 'all results normal'. That phrase can conceal important differences between assessments.

Make existing results usable

Before arranging more appointments at home, obtain the destination clinic's requirements for laboratory reports, imaging and translations. Ask whether it needs the actual scan images as well as the written interpretation. Different laboratories may use different units and reference ranges, so avoid copying isolated numbers into a message. A complete report gives the specialist more context. Where a result must be repeated, request a reason: it may be outdated, incomplete or unsuitable for the planned treatment. Knowing this early helps you organise necessary investigations without assuming that every repeat request is either essential or wasteful.

Leave time to interpret findings

A test result can change the treatment proposal and the travel needed to carry it out. Arrange a clinical discussion before committing to flights tied to an egg collection or transfer. Ask what further assessment would follow an unexpected result and whether that can happen near home. Keep one version of the investigation list showing what is complete, what remains outstanding and who reviews it. If both partners are involved, ensure their records reach the same treating team. The useful endpoint is a reasoned recommendation you understand, rather than a folder of results with no explanation of their implications.

Questions to take with you

  1. Which clinical question does each test answer?
  2. Will you accept my existing reports?
  3. Who explains results before I book travel?
