IVF add-ons: ask what the extra cost buys

Separate standard care from optional interventions.

Understand the decision

Clinics may offer additional tests or treatments alongside IVF. Ask what problem each add-on is intended to address and what evidence supports it for your situation. HFEA ratings can help frame that discussion, although a rating does not replace an individual consultation.

Put it into practice

Ask for the base plan and optional items to be priced separately. Discuss possible harms and what is known about improving outcomes that matter to you. You should be able to decline an optional intervention without losing access to an explanation of the standard plan. Keep the evidence and recommendation together in your notes.

Keep the bigger picture in view

Write down the questions that matter to your family before comparing clinics. Medical suitability, treatment eligibility, donor information and future access to records are separate issues; ask who is responsible for answering each one.

Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.

Questions to take with you

  1. Is this optional in my case?
  2. Which outcome is it intended to improve?
  3. What happens if I choose the standard plan alone?
