Decide what you want help with
Fertility counselling can offer space to discuss uncertainty, donor conception, a difficult result or disagreement about continuing treatment. The HFEA presents counselling as one of several forms of emotional support. You do not need to reach a crisis before asking about it. For treatment abroad, consider whether you want someone linked to the clinic or an independent professional who can remain involved after the trip. Ask about their fertility experience and qualifications. A helpful first conversation should explain the service clearly, allowing you to decide whether its approach and format feel suitable for you.
Check language and confidentiality
Emotional conversations may be harder in a second language, even when ordinary clinic communication feels manageable. Ask whether counselling is available in your preferred language or whether an appropriate interpreter can be arranged. Clarify what information is confidential, what is recorded and when anything may be shared with the treating team. If a partner attends, ask how individual and joint sessions work. You may each need room to speak separately. Avoid assuming that a coordinator who translates appointments can provide the same role as a trained counsellor. Understanding these boundaries makes it easier to use support honestly and comfortably.
Arrange continuity before leaving
Find out whether remote sessions can continue from your home country and what appointment times, fees and professional arrangements apply. Consider privacy at home: a quiet room and a time without work interruptions may matter as much as the platform used. Ask how to contact the service between sessions and what to do if you need urgent local help. You can also choose support near home, with no requirement to use the overseas clinic's provider. Keep the contact details somewhere accessible before results arrive. Emotional care is easier to reach when it is already organised, especially if the next decision feels different once you have returned.
