For informed conversations with your healthcare team. This guide is not personalised medical advice and has not been individually reviewed by a clinician.
Understand the decision
Ask how donors are recruited, screened and identified in the clinic’s records. Rules about anonymity, disclosure and family information differ between countries. Request a clear explanation of what information may be available to you and to a future child.
Put it into practice
Consider an independent counselling appointment and legal advice where needed. Ask how records are retained and how a family would obtain updated health information later. Keep copies of consent documents in a secure place. A short wait for treatment should not crowd out questions about the decades after it.
Keep the bigger picture in view
Write down the questions that matter to your family before comparing clinics. Medical suitability, treatment eligibility, donor information and future access to records are separate issues; ask who is responsible for answering each one.
Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.
Questions to take with you
- What donor information can a child access later?
- How are future health updates handled?
- Which rules apply to our circumstances?
