Understand the decision
Give the bariatric and anaesthetic teams a complete list of prescribed medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements. Ask which medicines need review around the operation and who will provide the written instructions. Do not stop or alter treatment on your own.
Put it into practice
Identify who will coordinate with the clinician managing your existing conditions. Keep a current medication list and record any changes made during the hospital stay. Before leaving, ask who will review the plan next. Consistent communication is particularly useful when care moves between countries and different prescribing teams.
Keep the bigger picture in view
The decision about bariatric treatment belongs within a broader medical and nutritional assessment. Discuss the support you can realistically access at home and make that support part of the plan before choosing where to have treatment.
Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.
Questions to take with you
- Who reviews my current medicines?
- Who authorises and records changes?
- When will my medication plan be reassessed?
