PRK or surface laser treatment abroad: plan for the procedure you are having

Recovery arrangements should reflect the corneal technique, not a generic laser package.

PRK, LASEK and TransPRK are surface laser treatments. They involve removing the cornea's surface layer before reshaping the tissue beneath. Moorfields explains that visual recovery is slower than after LASIK because the surface layer needs to regrow and smooth. Ask why this approach is recommended for your eyes.

That explanation should include the findings from your assessment and the alternatives available to you. Do not assume that a surface procedure is inferior because its early recovery differs, or that a faster recovery label makes another technique suitable. The choice should be connected to your individual examination.

Describe what returning to normal requires

Tell the surgeon about screen work, reading, travel connections and any job requiring reliable fine vision. Ask how recovery will be assessed for those tasks and what practical help might be needed. Avoid using a general advertisement about returning to work to set an inflexible deadline.

For example, someone planning a remote-working holiday may assume that they can spend the day on a laptop between reviews. Ask whether that is realistic for the proposed procedure and your circumstances. Consider reserving genuine time away from work and arranging flexible accommodation instead of building the trip around immediate productivity.

Confirm the review before departure

Ask about any bandage contact lens, who will check or remove it and what to do if it becomes displaced. Follow the treating team's instructions rather than handling it as an ordinary contact lens. Make sure the relevant appointment is included in the travel plan.

Keep your drop instructions and urgent contact route accessible, including an option for local examination after returning home. Clarify what would delay onward travel or require another review. A procedure-specific plan makes it easier to judge the commitment and to respond calmly if recovery does not fit the optimistic version of the itinerary.
