Show your actual haircut
If a close crop is your usual style, bring recent photographs to the transplant consultation. Do not rely only on examples showing long hair swept over the donor area. Ask the surgeon to discuss how the proposed procedure may look at the length you genuinely want to wear.
The NHS explains that strip harvesting leaves a linear scar, while follicular unit extraction leaves many small scars. Neither description means scarring is absent. Ask how your individual scalp, previous procedures and proposed donor pattern affect the appearance that can reasonably be expected.
Make the visual trade-off explicit
Ask to see relevant healed examples and enquire whether the photographs show the same haircut length, lighting and angle. These examples can help explain a trade-off but cannot predict your own result. The surgeon should distinguish an illustrative photograph from a personal outcome estimate.
For example, someone might be happy with coverage at the front yet unhappy if they feel unable to wear their preferred cut at the back. Raise that possibility directly. Ask whether changing the recipient-area objective, technique or overall decision would better match the importance you place on donor appearance.
Plan for both areas
Your written plan should describe the donor area as well as the area receiving hair. Ask how both will be photographed and reviewed, and who can assess a concern after you return home. Keep your haircut preferences in the consultation notes so they remain part of the shared understanding.
Discuss when your own surgeon wants you to resume clipping or shaving, rather than copying a timeline from another person's experience. If your work or personal preferences make a temporary hairstyle difficult, include that in the travel discussion. A result you can live with depends on the whole head and your routine, not only the frontal image used in an advertisement.
Questions to take with you
