Describe the sport you actually do

Returning to activity can mean a short walk, recreational cycling, running or a contact sport. Tell the specialist what matters to you before deciding on lengthening, including the level at which you participate and the movements involved. HSS places return to running after stature lengthening under surgical clearance. Ask how your own goals will be considered and what uncertainty remains. A general promise of normal activity is difficult to evaluate unless the consultation distinguishes daily mobility from repeated impact, rapid changes of direction or the demands of training and competition.

Ask how readiness is assessed

Discuss the roles of bone healing, joint movement, strength and functional assessment in deciding when activity can progress. Ask who gives clearance and how the surgeon and physiotherapist communicate. NHS physiotherapy information describes individual assessment of factors such as strength and balance; your lengthening programme should connect its tests to your intended activities. Do not substitute a calendar milestone, a pain-free day or a video of another patient for that assessment. If progress is slower than expected, ask which finding is limiting the next step and how it will be reviewed.

Build the handover around your goal

If rehabilitation continues near home, provide the therapist with the operation details, current restrictions and the sporting goals agreed with the surgeon. Check that the receiving professional can obtain clarification when needed. Discuss how a return-to-activity plan will be adjusted if symptoms recur or a later device-removal procedure is planned. Avoid booking a race, sporting holiday or physical selection test around an advertised recovery date before individual assessment supports it. Practical flexibility allows you to make a considered decision about participation without turning a prepaid event into pressure to exceed the activity your clinical team has authorised.

Questions to take with you

  1. How do my sport’s demands affect the decision to undergo lengthening?
  2. Which findings must support progression to impact or contact activity?
  3. Who provides final clearance when rehabilitation continues near home?
