Ask what the injection contains
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, involves processing a sample of your blood and injecting a selected component into the treatment area. It may be offered for hair loss or alongside a transplant. Ask which diagnosis it is intended to treat and what benefit the clinician expects in your circumstances.
The American Academy of Dermatology discusses PRP among hair-loss treatment options. That does not mean every protocol, package or patient has the same evidence behind it. Request an explanation of the proposed approach and how its benefit would be assessed independently of any other treatment you receive.
Look beyond an included session
Ask whether the recommendation is for one appointment or an ongoing course, what reviews are proposed and how the plan would change if it did not help. A complimentary session can still create future commitments. Clarify whether declining it affects the main procedure or simply removes an optional extra.
For example, a traveller may be offered PRP during a transplant trip but be unable to return regularly. Ask whether a clinician at home could provide a coherent continuation plan and what information they would need. Do not assume another service will use the same preparation method or accept responsibility for the original course.
Choose a meaningful way to evaluate it
Agree what observations will be used to judge change, such as standardised photographs or clinical assessment, and when discussion is worthwhile. If several treatments begin together, ask how confidently any improvement can be attributed to PRP. The answer may contain uncertainty, which should remain visible in your decision.
Request the procedure record and a contact for unexpected symptoms after an injection. Compare the full course, travel burden and follow-up with the alternatives discussed by your dermatologist. The useful purchase is an explained treatment plan with reviewable goals, rather than a session added because it sounds convenient while you are already abroad.
Questions to take with you
- What is PRP intended to add to my treatment?
- Does the proposed course require repeat visits?
- How will we assess whether it is helping?
