Understand the decision

Bring a description of what bothers you: shade, spacing, an individual tooth or discomfort when biting. This gives the conversation more useful direction than asking for a celebrity smile. Ask the dentist to separate functional problems from optional aesthetic changes.

Put it into practice

Request alternatives in writing and ask what doing nothing would mean. Discuss how the proposed design fits the rest of your mouth and what maintenance it creates. Take time to compare the plan with an independent opinion. The aim is to understand the commitment you are making to each tooth, including future care.

Keep the bigger picture in view

A treatment proposal should explain the condition of each tooth and the least invasive reasonable options. Keep a copy of the tooth chart and proposed work so an independent dentist can discuss the same plan with you.

Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.

Questions to take with you

  1. Which changes are optional?
  2. Can we address only the teeth that concern me?
  3. What future maintenance does this choice create?
