Preparing your home for joint surgery recovery

Understand the decision

Describe your stairs, bathroom, bed height and usual daily tasks to the rehabilitation team. Ask what equipment or changes they recommend for your specific procedure. An assessment based on your home is more useful than a generic shopping list.

Put it into practice

Arrange help with meals, transport and essential tasks if needed. Confirm who will explain safe use of any equipment. Check deliveries and access before leaving for treatment. Keep the clinical team informed if the support you expected is no longer available, because that may affect the practical recovery plan.

Keep the bigger picture in view

Describe your daily limitations and the activities you want to regain. Your surgical and rehabilitation teams need the same understanding of these goals, along with a practical plan for mobility and support when you return home.

Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.

Questions to take with you

  1. Which home features need attention?
  2. What equipment is appropriate for me?
  3. Who can show me how to use it safely?
