Ask what can be preserved
The meniscus cushions the knee and helps distribute load. A tear may be treated with a repair that joins the tissue or, in selected circumstances, removal of an unstable portion. AAOS explains that the tear's location, blood supply, tissue quality and condition of the rest of the joint influence the choice. Ask the surgeon what your scan suggests and what remains uncertain until the knee is examined. Do not assume every tear needs surgery. The consultation should consider symptoms and reasonable non-operative options, particularly when the tear appears alongside arthritis rather than after a clear injury.
Understand different recovery requirements
Repair and partial meniscectomy are not interchangeable from a rehabilitation perspective. A repair needs time and protection to heal, and its restrictions may differ from those after trimming. Ask about weight-bearing, bending, crutches and physiotherapy for each possibility without relying on a universal timetable. If the final choice will be made during arthroscopy, discuss both pathways beforehand. An overseas itinerary based only on the less restrictive option can create practical difficulties after surgery. Your hotel, journey and help at home should accommodate the procedure that might actually be performed, including a change from the initial expectation.
Get the final instructions to your therapist
Arrange a home physiotherapist who can work from the surgeon's specific protocol and operative findings. Ask whether the repair involves a meniscal root or another feature that changes precautions. Obtain a report stating what was repaired or removed, along with any other procedures performed in the knee. A generic discharge sheet saying knee arthroscopy may not be enough. Confirm how the therapist can clarify conflicting instructions and how progress will be reviewed. The aim is to protect the treatment while rebuilding function. Choosing a clinic involves the quality of that handover as well as the technique offered inside the operating theatre.
