Using a lengthening controller: practise before discharge

Check training, records and technical support for the equipment you take away.

Learn the system you will actually use

Some internal lengthening nails are adjusted using an external controller. HSS describes a magnetically driven system, while Cambridge University Hospitals outlines patient teaching for its use. Ask the team to demonstrate your exact device and supervise you operating it before discharge. You should understand the prescribed process without being expected to troubleshoot mechanical problems independently. If a companion will help, arrange the same teaching for them. A manufacturer animation can support understanding, but it does not establish that the equipment has been set up correctly for your individual treatment plan.

Clarify what gets recorded

Ask how successful adjustments are confirmed and how the team wants them logged. Establish what to do if the display is unclear, the device stops unexpectedly or you are uncertain whether a session completed. Do not repeat an adjustment merely to be sure, or change a setting based on an online explanation. Keep the current prescription and the device instructions together, with a separate contact for technical problems if the clinic uses one. Ask how equipment faults are distinguished from concerns that require a medical review and who coordinates the response.

Prepare for moving the equipment

Before changing accommodation or travelling home, ask about transport, power requirements, storage and any manufacturer restrictions. Confirm whether the controller is hired, loaned or purchased and how replacement or return is arranged. Check what happens if it is lost, damaged or unavailable, including access to a replacement in the country where you will be staying. Obtain any documentation needed for travel directly from the clinic or manufacturer. This practical preparation protects continuity of the prescribed routine without assuming that a device can be improvised, shared with another patient or replaced by a superficially similar product.

Questions to take with you

  1. Can you supervise me completing the prescribed controller process?
  2. What should I do if I am unsure whether an adjustment completed?
  3. How is replacement equipment provided during an overseas stay?
