FUE and FUT: understanding the difference

Start with the harvesting method, then ask why it fits your case.

Understand the decision

FUE removes follicular units individually; FUT removes a strip of scalp that is divided into grafts. These are ways of obtaining donor hair, not promises about the appearance of the final result. Ask the surgeon to discuss scarring and how each option relates to your hair characteristics.

Put it into practice

Bring photographs showing how you normally wear your hair and explain your priorities. Discuss the donor area as carefully as the receiving area. Ask who performs extraction, preparation and placement, and how the team records what was done. Technique names are useful only when connected to a plan for you.

Keep the bigger picture in view

A hair restoration consultation should start with a diagnosis and a long-term plan. Ask the clinician to document your baseline, the proposed approach and the alternatives you discussed, including the option of waiting.

Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.

Questions to take with you

  1. Why is this harvesting method proposed?
  2. What scarring should I understand?
  3. Who performs each part of the procedure?
