For informed conversations with your healthcare team. This guide is not personalised medical advice and has not been individually reviewed by a clinician.
Ask why it is recommended
When finasteride is suggested during an overseas hair consultation, ask what part of your hair-loss plan it is intended to address. The decision deserves its own discussion, even if the clinic routinely offers it after surgery. You should understand the proposed benefit and the alternatives before starting.
The NHS lists sexual side effects and mood changes among the issues to discuss with a prescriber; some sexual effects can persist after stopping. Share relevant medical and mental-health history and ask how the clinician will take it into account. A brief reassurance that side effects are uncommon is not the whole consent conversation.
Know what action to take
Request written instructions about side effects and a named prescribing contact. For finasteride used for hair loss, NHS guidance says to stop the medicine and seek medical advice if low mood develops. Ask the prescriber to explain the advice that applies to your treatment and circumstances.
For example, a traveller may return home with tablets labelled in an unfamiliar language and only a general clinic messaging number. Resolve that before departure: obtain an understandable leaflet, the generic name and a route to a clinician. If urgent symptoms occur, seek appropriate local help rather than waiting for the overseas practice to open.
Plan a review beyond the first supply
Ask who will assess whether the treatment is helping and who can renew it. Contact a local prescriber in advance if continuing care there is intended. Do not assume that a medicine supplied abroad automatically becomes the responsibility of your usual doctor.
Keep a record of when treatment began and any symptoms you want to discuss. Agree how the plan would change if you decide the trade-off is unacceptable. The practical aim is a decision you can revisit with a clinician, rather than an indefinite commitment hidden inside a one-off travel purchase.
