For informed conversations with your healthcare team. This guide is not personalised medical advice and has not been individually reviewed by a clinician.
Start with the anatomical explanation
The thigh bone and shin bone are different surgical locations, not interchangeable menu options for buying a particular height gain. HSS describes stature lengthening involving the femur and, in some cases, the tibia. Ask the specialist to explain why a particular segment is being proposed for you after examination and imaging. Discuss the relationship between your current proportions, alignment and the clinical plan. A preference for a certain appearance can be part of the conversation, but it should not replace an assessment of whether the proposed operation is appropriate and manageable.
Ask about all the structures involved
If tibial lengthening is proposed, ask how the fibula and nearby joints are addressed in the plan. If femoral lengthening is proposed, ask which joint and soft-tissue issues the team will monitor. Request a diagram showing the bone cuts, implant position and any additional procedures under discussion. You do not need to select the surgical technique yourself; you need to understand what you are consenting to and why. Ask how the segment choice affects rehabilitation, permitted loading and practical care, rather than assuming the same instructions apply to all forms of leg lengthening.
Compare complete pathways
Some proposals discuss more than one segment over time. Ask whether later surgery is a possibility or an assumed part of the plan, and what assessment would precede any further decision. Each stage should have its own rationale, risks and consent discussion. For overseas treatment, clarify whether a different segment changes the anticipated support or access to physiotherapy you will require. Keep a record of the alternatives considered and why they were accepted or rejected. This makes comparisons between centres more meaningful than comparing only their advertised maximum gains or the number of operations included in a package.
Questions to take with you
- Why is this bone segment appropriate for my anatomy?
- What additional structures or procedures are included?
- Would any later segment lengthening require a fresh assessment and decision?
