Dental sedation abroad: a transfer driver may not be enough

Arrange the person and practical support required by your sedation team.

Confirm what sedation means

A dental package may use phrases such as 'relaxed treatment' without naming the method. Ask whether the proposal involves local anaesthetic alone, conscious sedation or general anaesthesia, and who will assess you for it. The practical arrangements should follow that specific plan.

Intravenous sedation can affect what you can safely do after the appointment. King's College Hospital's patient guidance includes travelling with an escort and avoiding driving, work and important transactions during the instructed period. Ask your treating team for its individual requirements well before choosing flights or accommodation.

Give the escort a clear role

Ask whether a responsible adult must remain at the clinic, accompany you afterwards and stay with you at your accommodation. Find out what information that person needs and what language the team will use for instructions. A paid car transfer may only cover transport, leaving the remaining responsibilities unresolved.

For example, travelling with a friend who has booked an evening excursion may not satisfy the support arrangement the clinic requires. Share the written instructions with your companion before either of you books activities. If you are travelling alone, ask the clinical team what suitable arrangements are available and verify their scope.

Move decisions before the procedure

Complete the treatment discussion and review the financial agreement before sedation. Organise keys, transport details and useful telephone numbers so that your escort can find them easily. Keep the accommodation close enough for the journey advised by the team, without relying on yourself to manage unfamiliar connections.

Check who decides when you can travel onwards and what would lead to a longer stay. If the sedation plan changes after assessment, revisit the support arrangements as well. A workable trip accounts for the hours after leaving the dental chair, including help with ordinary tasks that may otherwise be overlooked in a package description.

  2. What must my escort do after discharge?
  3. Who decides when I can travel onwards?
