Considering a BBL abroad: ask about the actual safety protocol

Explore ultrasound guidance, injection anatomy and direct surgical responsibility.

Put the operation ahead of the silhouette

A Brazilian butt lift involves fat grafting to the buttocks, and its risks require particular attention. The ASPS joint safety statement identifies serious harm, including fatal fat embolism, associated with gluteal fat grafting. A desirable photograph cannot answer whether a proposed operation is appropriate for you. Ask the surgeon to explain the main risk mechanisms in language you understand and how the plan responds to them. Discuss whether your goals are realistic without escalating the procedure to match a highly edited or unusually posed image.

Ask for a clear account of ultrasound use

The joint statement supports real-time ultrasound during fat placement to help keep injections above the muscle fascia. Ask who performs the injection, who operates and interprets the ultrasound, and how the clinic documents the process. A machine shown in a promotional video is not a description of your surgical plan. Request an explanation of the surgeon’s training, facility arrangements and response to an emergency. These measures address specific safety concerns; they should never be presented as eliminating all risk or making every candidate suitable for surgery.

Connect the technique to the trip

Ask how the proposed fat collection and grafting areas affect positioning, transport, dressing and assistance after surgery. Have the team review your planned accommodation and journey rather than relying on a special cushion sold with the package. Clarify where in-person reviews occur and how urgent assessment is obtained at night. Discuss what happens financially if the surgeon recommends a smaller operation or advises against proceeding after examination. You should be able to decline without feeling that an expensive flight obliges you to accept an operation. Consider an independent specialist opinion if the explanation centres on volume or discounts while leaving the safety protocol vague.

Questions to take with you

  1. How will you confirm the injection plane during my operation?
  2. Who performs and documents the ultrasound-guided fat placement?
  3. What happens if my goals cannot be pursued within your safety limits?
