Understand the decision

Weight-loss surgery is a medical decision involving your health, treatment history and future support. Ask for an assessment that explores reasonable alternatives and explains why a particular operation is being considered. A booking form focused only on weight and height is not a complete consultation.

Put it into practice

Discuss the care you can access at home before choosing a destination. Ask who will coordinate nutrition, monitoring and any concerns after the trip. Get the proposal and responsibilities in writing. A plan is more useful when it describes the years after surgery as clearly as the hospital stay.

Keep the bigger picture in view

The decision about bariatric treatment belongs within a broader medical and nutritional assessment. Discuss the support you can realistically access at home and make that support part of the plan before choosing where to have treatment.

Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.

Questions to take with you

  1. Why is this procedure proposed for me?
  2. Which alternatives have we considered?
  3. Who coordinates my continuing care?
