For informed conversations with your healthcare team. This guide is not personalised medical advice and has not been individually reviewed by a clinician.
Understand the decision
Different recommendations are a reason to ask for the underlying findings. Request copies of your measurements and the written reason for the proposed procedure. A second consultation can focus on the specific point of disagreement instead of starting from an advertisement.
Put it into practice
Ask both clinicians what would make them change their recommendation. Compare how they explain uncertainty, alternatives and follow-up. You do not need to choose immediately because travel is already being discussed. If you still cannot describe the main trade-off in your own words, allow more time for the decision.
Keep the bigger picture in view
Your eye examination, lifestyle and expectations all belong in the decision. Ask the ophthalmologist to record the measurements behind their recommendation and how you will receive timely follow-up if your vision changes.
Before making a commitment, take the written proposal to a qualified clinician who can assess your own circumstances. Use the questions below to record answers and identify anything still unresolved. Keep the plan, contact details and agreed next steps together so you can revisit the decision without relying on memory.
Questions to take with you
- Which finding explains the difference in advice?
- What would change your recommendation?
- Can you explain the main trade-off plainly?
